HOW IT WORKS
Responsibility. Opportunity. Investment
Part of our strategic Travelers' Philanthropy initiative that unites businesses and customers in the tourism sector with local environmental, social, and economic causes.
1. We seek out businesses and individuals who are community-minded and dedicated to caring for the people of Monteverde and their cloud forest home.
2. Then, we work together to create a mechanism for channeling dollars into the community. This takes many forms: annual giving, matching customer donations, and donated proceeds from a select product, for example.
3. Finally, we reinvest those funds in our impact model and, principally, our Small Grants Program.
Monteverde Coffee Tours Alliance
In 2020, four local coffee tours formed an alliance that recognizes the importance of practicing community philanthropy. They implemented a strategy that redirests $1 per visitor to the Monteverde Community Fund and the Asoc. Desarrollo San Luis to invest in community-led projects.
Only on their first year, the Alliance raised over $20,000 for community-led projects.
With the funds raised, the following projects have received support:
-Emprende Rural: The National Distance University (UNED) is leading this program which will provide free advice to small entrepreneurs in the Monteverde region. Project will begin in Feb-March 2022.
-Networks and Seeds of the Forest: Intertwining knowledge in community:
Working with local youth and their families to equip them with the practical knowledge and experience they need to expand their integral well-being and work in their community toward a more ecologically responsible society. Project begins in November 2021.
-Monteverde Produces: Rescuing our more sustainable traditions: Lead by the Monteverde Institute, this project will be supporting food and nutritional security by strengthening local production, promoting composting, home gardens, Costa Rican recipes, and more. Project begins in November 2021.
On September 1st, 2021, we celebrated their first anniversary with a review of their accomplishments to date. The Alliance played a key role in the funding of that year's Small Grants Program, providing 30% of the money distributed.

Monteverde Hotels Solidarity Alliance
As a result of the experience lived in Monteverde in 2020 and thanks to the positive leadership of local entrepreneurs, the Monteverde Hotels Solidarity Alliance was born. Inspired by the coffee tour alliance, for six months they allocated $1 per visitor to support two important projects in the area. Learn more about their accomplishments by watching the video below.
Alianza Monteverde joins the Community Fund with a focus on the mental and emotional health of the youth in the area. This group of local companies not only strive to provide a unique experience in Monteverde through the sale of touristic packages, but also have committed to allocate a percentage of their profits to invest in the well-being of young people in the community, developing and leading a series of projects. Soon we will be sharing all the details of this great initiative that is still in development.
